Personality:
Karkat is a loud, potentially abrasive, and verbose young man. He is also a hopeless romantic at heart, which can be seen in canon from his collection of romcoms and his willingness to help others with their relationship issues.
He’s also very honest to others, you can always rely on Kakart to tell you exactly what he thinks of you and your actions, which can lead him to be unintentionally hurtful as he tends to get carried away with himself when he talks. However if he realises that he’s gone to far he will appologise(Once he stops kicking himself for doing it).

While he is very outspoken about most things, including his own abilities, the truth of the matter is he actually has a lot of self doubt and loathing. Canon-wise his mutant blood status is a constant reminder of how unimportant and hated he is with in the blood spectrum, which makes him actively hide his blood colour unlike all other trolls who as part of culture wear clothes that bear their blood colour on them. While Karkat claims his colour isn’t important, and does believe this on some level, is still really touchy about it.

AU wise, Karkat's insecurities stems from his parents not being around much, his own appearance, as well as his own feelings that nothing he does will ever be as important as his dad has ever done, or as intricate as his mothers work. Which given that Karkat is rather moody, he tends to get angry quickly when he can't get things right the first time and will chose not to do them again. However, if he comes back to what he was doing later, with a more even head he does tend to get the job done. This is all part of his need to show and prove to everyone how good he is at what he does, to go with his claims, however his doing this causes him to put a great deal of pressure on himself, because let's face it, he's still just a child, and screwing up is just a part of life, Karkat just manages to take his failings as further proof that he will never be anything other than useless and extra baggage that other people have to deal with(And issue which is compounded on after his mothers death, and his father gives him to his uncle to look after. Karkat saw this as him being not worth the effort for his father and therefore now someone else's problem.).

Canonly, as imaginative as Karkat is with his insults and threats, he is actually the least violent troll of the beta trolls. As such he isn't the first one to jump into action in dangerous situations, he actually tends to freeze. Which can be evidenced by Eridan's attack on Sollux, Feferi, and Kanaya. While Eridan murdered two of them and knocked out another. All Karkat did was stand there, looking visiblly shocked, however due to him being on the otherside of the room and not close enough to do anything Eridan had left him alone in there. However once the immediate action had happened, and Karkat had a chance to catch up to what just happened, he went into his own mindset and went to Kanaya, and attempted to revive her, which was technically fruitless as there was no way she should have been revived. He still tried his best to save her, realising it wouldn't work, with Gamzee taking that moment to become properly sober and therefore when as bloodthirsty crazy as his blood group tends to. Karkat while utterly terrified went out of his way to make sure the unconscious Sollux is safe. Because despite what he says about Sollux, Karkat still considers him his best friend so he would want to keep himself. Which is also demonstrated by Sollux’s deaths caused Karkat to be so emotional that he was brought to tears.

An example of Karkat’s less than violent nature can also be seen during [S] Attempt rare and highly dangerous 5x SHOWDOWN COMBO and the scenes that followed. Where the situation had gotten so incredibly intense and dangerous, Karkat calmly came into the situation and calmed everyone down, becoming morials with Gamzee in the proc. Which is a vestige of his past ancestors(Signless in particular) who believed in peace over conflict.

Background (AU!Canon; HP):
(Paranormal) Growing up, Karkat had a fairly normal life. His father was a muggle born wizard who went on to join the armed forces. His mother worked in an apothecary and was a rather competent witch.
As his father was overseas a most of the year, and his mother would work long hours, Karkat would spend a lot of time on his own. Which caused him to feel very lonely as well as cause him to wonder if he was the reason they weren’t around all the time. While these worries were always in the back of his mind, that didn’t mean his parents weren’t loving and encouraging when they were there.
His mother would always ask about his day, read to him at night and take him out on the weekend. And when back from a tour, his father would make a big deal about seeing him and his wife. As he truly did miss them while helping muggles feel safer.

Things changed when Karkat was ten. While his mother was working on a large order something went wrong and the potion she was working on went horrible wrong and caused her untimely death. The news devastated him, however he had no one to talk to, as his father was, like always, out of the country. His father couldn’t just drop his responsibilities to just take a normal job and look after his son, he arranged to have him live with his younger brother, Sal and his family. It should be noted that while the brothers got along, they weren’t close, so Karkat had only met them a handful of times till now.

Karkat didn’t take well to this, he had always been a well voiced and opinionated child, however his mother just suddenly leaving him and his father seemingly not interested in looking after him, Karkat became very insecure about things and because outwardly abrasive, antagonistic, and would constantly rant angrily over anything and everything. Making live initially hard for his Aunt and Uncle.
His cousin however, seemed less than bothered by his attitude and easily treated him like her brother from the off. Due to her constant attentions, Karkat was quick to take to her, and has since become rather protective of her. Though he will deny to anyone outside of the family that it’s because he is fond of her, he’s just doing his job as a cousin.

Karkat was beginning to open up to his Aunt and Uncle more, until on parents day in his third year dealt him a further blow when he found his fathers non-corporeal form coming to Parents day, as he had died only a few days earlier in battle. The whole family grieved, Karkat closed himself off again. His already deep seated feelings of not being important to his parents or anyone else flaring up.
Unlike when he lost his mother, Karkat managed to recover from this blow sooner due to his friends, Aunt, Uncle and cousin. However he still has his moments where something causes him to flair up. But with his family offering to legally adopt him, he is definitely getting better.

Kankri’s appearance and confession of whom he was, was also another shock to Karkat, that he had an uncle that no one told him about, an uncle he was indirectly named in honour of no less. While he wasn’t told due to the pain it had caused the family, Karkat had seen it to mean he was not worth telling.

How would your character fit in to each House?

Gryffindor: Karkat has the hallmarks of a strong leader, he can adapt to most situations and keeps a generally clear head when he is required to. He does however have something of a short fuse and will go off on long angry rants until he believes you've either gotten the idea or manage to talk him down from his raging
That all being said there are some things that Karkat just can't handle and tends to freak out. Despite how he acts his heart is always in the right place and he always tries his bet to help his friends. Even if he makes it hard to realise he's trying to help.

Hufflepuff: Loyal and determined are two things that Karkat are. And he does stick things out to the end, providing he doesn't get furious with himself during this and just quits on it. It takes something major to happen for Karkat to just stop being friends with someone and mean it. Canonly, even when Gamzee went into a rage and murdered some of their friend, Karkat helped calm him down, and forgave him, because he knew that the purple blooded troll couldn't help it. However he promised no end of hate for Eridan who killed Feferi and Kanaya for no other reason then ugly angry jealousy.

Ravenclaw: While Karkat is clever, he isn't smart enough to have any real standing within Ravenclaw. At most the only thing that really associates Karkat with Ravenclaw is his ability to say some really creative and witty things when insulting people of being overly dramatic about something.

Slytherin: Like mentioned before, Karkat has the makings of a fine leader, can be resourceful and determined. He does lack a sense of staunch traditionalism and that want to go the extra mile to do what ever it takes to get something done. He is also fairly ruthless and will jump at chances to be in charge. However he lacks any real subtlety which causes him to have things backfire on him.

[What would be a suitable way of disciplining them?] More often than not, detentions will work. he might complaing, whine and rant because he has one. But after going through it he'll try to be more
[Can I troll/mindscrew/mess with in general?] Go for it, because he's just going to try it right back.
[Can I spit at/jinx/step on/etc? (i.e. fighting)] As long as you know he's not going to enjoy it and will rant and rage, go for it.

My Karkat Head Canons.

I will be updating this regularly with things that I believe make Karkat tick in General.

While Karkat hates the majority of John's movie collection. The only one he never complains about watching is "Armageddon". While it's a stupid movie with only a rough grasp of astro-science, it has enough romance between Affleck and Tyler to make the whole train wreck bearable.
If someone manages to put up with him enough to become his Matesprite, they will quickly find out that his RomCom collection will really benefit them, as they have shown him so many different ways to show that person how much he pities him, as he is incredibly romantic underneath all that barely contained rage.
His less violent nature stems from his blood mutation, by avoiding violence he avoids the chance of shedding his own blood and exposing his defective body to other trolls.
